Fetal and Neonatal Neurology Program

Fetal and Neonatal Neurology Program

Brain Injuries and Neurological Conditions in Babies

We provide comprehensive evaluation and advanced care for newborns with brain injuries and congenital (present at birth) conditions so they have the best chance to grow and develop.

Doctors from across North Texas refer patients to our neurology team for specialized care. We tailor treatment to each baby’s unique needs and support the whole family to help each child develop as typically as possible. Children's Health℠ also is the only hospital in the region to offer therapeutic hypothermia to reduce the long-term effects of brain injury from loss of blood and oxygen at birth.

Expert care begins early

Care for many babies begins before birth. If fetal imaging shows something unusual or if your baby is born with a neurological condition, our team is here to help. We work with children who have conditions ranging from seizures and epilepsy to neural tube defects. Our specialists work together to trade ideas, share insights and develop a treatment plan that’s right for your child. Treatments, tests and therapies may include:

Comprehensive and specialized treatment

When we see families during pregnancy, we make a comprehensive treatment plan so we can begin care after their baby is born. We have a range of specialists who work with babies and newborns.

Right after birth, the brain grows rapidly. Therapies and care during this important time can help nurture the healthy parts of a baby’s brain to improve neurological and developmental outcomes. Our care team focuses on trying to give every baby as good a chance in life as possible.

A family-centered program

When babies need medical care right after birth, we do everything we can to keep families together. We have comfortable sleeping rooms, and we try not to separate a baby and mother during their hospital stay, unless necessary. Our care team works closely with the entire family to be sure they have the tools and confidence they need to help their baby grow and develop.

Continued care throughout childhood

Children’s Health can provide all the care your baby needs throughout childhood. The FETAL Center can identify problems before birth, and together we offer a continuity of care – from the FETAL Center, during your baby’s NICU stay (if needed), and through early childhood with the guidance of the Fetal and Neonatal Neurology Program. If your child needs ongoing care, we will work closely with specialists in neurology and other departments to provide all the care your child needs, throughout childhood and adolescence.
