Pediatric Concussion Therapy Program

Our concussion therapy program relies on our team’s deep and varied expertise to help get your child back to their normal life as efficiently and as effectively as possible.

At Children’s Health℠, our expert team specializes in treating pediatric concussions, no matter the cause. This includes concussions from traumatic injury, like a car accident, or even a concussion that came from a smaller injury, like a fall. Many other providers focus on sports-related concussions or don’t specialize in children and teens. Unlike most providers, we see all ages from toddlers to teen and we accept Medicaid.

Our team specializes in pediatric concussion care and collaborates across disciplines to treat your child’s concussion from every angle. A pediatric neurologist who specializes in concussions will manage your child’s care from diagnosis to recovery. Depending on their needs, your child may also see a:

  • Nurse practitioner
  • Neuropsychologist
  • Occupational therapist
  • Physical therapist
  • Speech therapist
  • Psychologist
  • Social worker

We’ll also work with your child’s school to provide guidance on your child’s return to playing and learning. That way, your child can get the support they need as they recover. Together, we can help your child get to the point where they can participate as they did prior to their injury.

Speeding up recovery

Our specialized approach to assessing your child allows us to catch more details about your child’s specific injury. That means we can better identify the best care plan for them, as an individual. This helps ensure a speedy, effective recovery.

Every child diagnosed with a concussion undergoes a standard test to determine whether they are concussed and how severely. In addition to this standard assessment, Children’s Health also evaluates your child’s memory, balance, cognition, eye movement which enables us to identify needs – like speech therapy – that might be missed by just the standard concussion assessment.

Most of the children we treat for concussions return to the same activities they enjoyed before their injury. The quicker your child can see us, the quicker they can get the specialized care they need to get back to their routines.

Treating all concussion types

We treat all concussions, whether they are caused by sports or other physical trauma, like a car accident. We also help children who have had multiple concussions recover. Whatever your child’s concussion history, we’re here to help get them back to their daily activities.

We also ensure that our team members work together and remain consistent on testing, assessment and treatment between sites. For example, if your child begins concussion therapy in an inpatient setting, their personalized treatment program will continue as they transition to outpatient care.

Individualized, expert, age-appropriate care

We see children of all ages, from toddlers through 18-year-olds. We individualize your child’s treatment based on the activities they want to get back to. We can get athletes back to peak performance, and we can get your child back to succeeding in the classroom the way they were before their injury. We are also well-versed in making your child’s care age-appropriate, and helping them hit key milestones for their developmental stage.
