Biography

Alvin Chi, M.D. is a sports medicine physician at Children's Health℠ who specializes in treating sport and physical activity-related musculoskeletal injuries. Growing up in Idaho, Dr. Chi remembers the profound impact sports had on him. As an avid club and school soccer player, he struggled with overuse injuries unique to the pediatric population. His struggles with overtraining sparked his interest in medicine and inspired him to become a sports medicine physician that helps athletes optimize their performance while preventing and managing injuries unique to their sport.

Dr. Chi earned his undergraduate degree at Rice University and his MD at Texas A&M College of Medicine, where he was the recipient of the merit-based Joseph B. Collerain endowed scholarship. He went on to complete his pediatric residency at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City where he provided sideline coverage for Bishop Ward High School, Sporting KC Academy, and the NAIA National Basketball Championship. He then attended sports medicine fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio and served as a team physician for Ohio Dominican University. During his fellowship, he was trained in sports ultrasound for both diagnosis and ultrasound-guided procedures. After graduation, he distinguished himself further in musculoskeletal ultrasound, attaining RMSK® sonography certification.

As a passionate learner who is always hungry for improvement, Dr. Chi has spoken in multiple CME-accredited conferences on youth sport specialization and has published a book chapter in The Youth Athlete: A Practitioner’s Guide to Providing Comprehensive Sports Medicine Care. Dr. Chi strives to be a clinician who listens to his patients and provides personalized care that addresses his patients’ unique needs.

Outside of work, Dr. Chi enjoys running, Olympic lifting, trying out new restaurants with his wife, and being involved with his local church.
