Biography

David Lehenbauer, M.D., is a Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgeon and Surgical Director for Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Children’s Health℠. He is also an Associate Professor of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at UT Southwestern Medical Center. 

Dr. Lehenbauer specializes in neonatal heart surgery, caring for children with congenital heart conditions and treating heart failure. He also has deep expertise in tracheal and airway surgery.

Dr. Lehenbauer earned his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He then completed his general surgery residency at UT Southwestern Medical Center and Parkland Memorial Hospital, followed by cardiothoracic surgery residency training at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. He went on to complete a fellowship in congenital cardiac surgery at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Lehenbauer serves as Surgical Director for Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulatory Support at Children’s Health, helping lead advanced surgical care for children with complex heart disease and heart failure.

Dr. Lehenbauer’s research focuses on advancing surgical treatments for children with complex heart and airway conditions. Through his academic work, he seeks to improve outcomes and expand treatment options for patients with congenital heart disease and heart failure.
