Pharmacy Internship Program

As a pharmacy intern at Children’s Health Medical Center Dallas, you will play a vital role in making life better for children! The pharmacy department is dedicated to increasing future pharmacists’ interest in pediatrics by providing its interns an immersive educational and hands on experience.

  • Responsibilities

    • Perform operational duties in central pharmacy and sterile compounding cleanrooms.
    • Engage in clinical workup, verification, and documentation alongside pharmacists.
    • Administer seasonal influenza and COVID-19 immunizations to patients.
    • Conduct medication history interviews and associated documentation upon patient admission.
    • Present and facilitate patient cases, topic discussions, and journal clubs across several different disease states.
    • Contribute to quality improvement projects including medication use evaluations, medication utilization reviews, and drug monographs.
    • Complete various activities as assigned by pharmacy leaders and preceptors.
  • Structure

    • P1 Spring Semester
      • Focus on central pharmacy operations including medication prep/check as well as medication management systems and automated dispensing cabinets.

    • P2 and P3 Summer Break
      • Focus on clinical pharmacy practice including patient interviewing/counseling and medication reconciliation.

    • P2 and P3 Fall and Spring Semesters
      • Focus on pharmacy operations system wide and clinical practice specific to the Emergency Department.

    • P4 School Year
      • Focus on mastering skills learned across all areas throughout the program experience.  
  • Schedule

    Summer Break

    • Weekday staffing includes business hours Monday through Friday with an average of 40 hours weekly.
    • Weekend staffing requires one 10-hour shift monthly in central pharmacy.

     

    Fall and Spring Semesters

    • No weekday staffing required.
    • Weekend staffing requires two 10-hour shifts monthly in central pharmacy.
    • Additional weekday and/or weekend shifts may be picked up if interested. 
  • Mentorship

    Interns are assigned a mentor in the current pharmacy resident class and are to meet with their mentor at least once per quarter. The goal is to provide interns insight into his or her field(s) of interest, post-graduate training opportunities, as well as career guidance following graduation from pharmacy school.

  • Qualifications

    • Employment Experience
      • Previous pharmacy (retail or hospital) experience, preferred

    • Education
      • Currently enrolled in an ACPE approved college of pharmacy program, required

    • Licensing and Certification:
      • Texas Pharmacist-Intern license, required
      • Basic Life Support certification (within 90 days of hire), required
      • IV certification, preferred
      • Immunization certification, preferred
     

    Two P1 pharmacy students are recruited annually to participate in the Children’s Health pharmacy internship program. Applications open in September of every calendar year.
