What is MOC?

The MOC Portfolio Program is available as a resource for physicians at every step of a QI/PI project process from creation to documentation to submitting participation. Refer below for the responsibilities for the Project Lead, MOC Program Manager and MOC Committee. Developed by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) in conjunction with the 24 certifying Boards, Maintenance of Certification (MOC) provides physicians the foundation to demonstrate lifelong learning and education. MOC is a four-part program that drives physicians to provide the absolute best possible care for their patients.

Parts 1 - 4

The four-part system addresses:

  • Part 1 - Physician Professional Standing
    • Hold a valid and unrestricted medical license
  • Part 2 - Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment
    • Assess and enhance clinical knowledge and skills vital to a physician’s practice
  • Part 3 - Cognitive Expertise Through Examination
    • Pass a written exam
  • Part 4 - Improvements in Professional Practice
    • Participate in ongoing quality and process enhancement activities to improve patient outcomes

Improving Professional Practice (Part 4) of Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requires physicians to demonstrate competence in systematic measurement and improvement in patient care. The Children’s Health℠ MOC Portfolio Program helps physicians receive Part 4 credit for leading or participating in quality improvement efforts within Children’s Health.

Participating Boards

The following Boards are currently members in the ABMS Multispecialty Portfolio Program. Participation credit can be submitted by the Children’s Health℠ MOC Portfolio on a physician’s behalf for qualifying initiatives.
