Biography
Sonal Bhatia, MBBS, MD, FACNS, is a pediatric neurologist and epileptologist at Children’s Health℠. She is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neurology at UT Southwestern. She has a special interest in caring for children who have epilepsy, infantile spasms and developmental and epileptic encephalopathies.
“My specialty allows me to combine a child's complex, developing and ever-changing neuroanatomy with diagnostics and life-changing therapies. It also allows me to provide comfort and counseling to children and families during vulnerable times. So, it’s both intellectually challenging and emotionally fulfilling,” she says.
Growing up, Dr. Bhatia was always fascinated by science and biology and is proud to have received a strong clinical foundation in medical school at Topiwala National Medical College and Bai Yamunabai Nair Charitable Hospital in Mumbai, India. She then went on to complete residencies in pediatric neurology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and at Medical University of South Carolina. Additionally, she completed a fellowship in epilepsy at Medical University of South Carolina.
Dr. Bhatia speaks five languages and has published more than 40 journal articles. The articles include research on immune-related epilepsy, antiseizure medications for Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome, therapies for developmental and epileptic encephalopathies. These accomplishments have helped her to deliver equitable care for children with epilepsy.
Outside of work, Dr. Bhatia enjoys reading, traveling, playing scrabble and badminton.
