Biography

Afia Twumasi, M.D., is board-certified in pediatrics and works with children and families at Children's Health℠. As a pediatric hospitalist, Dr. Twumasi takes care of acutely ill children. Her interests include diversity, equity and inclusion, advocacy and firearm injury prevention. In addition, she is an Instructor in the Division of Pediatric Hospitalist Medicine at UT Southwestern.

Dr. Twumasi earned her medical degree from the University of Texas at Galveston. She completed her residency in pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital and served as Chief Resident while completing her residency.

She is a member of the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Pediatrics. She has received several certifications, including Pediatric Advanced Life Support and Neonatal Resuscitation Program Provider. Dr. Twumasi serves as a member of multiple organizations and societies, including the Gun Violence Prevention Learning Collaborative for Health Systems and Hospitals and Mom’s Demand Action – Be SMART.

Dr. Twumasi is committed to community service and has held numerous volunteer positions. She served during COVID-19 in the vaccine clinic, as a mentor with Galveston Urban Ministries and as a volunteer with the SAFE Alliance Domestic Violence Shelter Child Development Center.

She is also a lecturer and presenter on many safety and health topics. Dr. Twumasi presented at the Pediatric Academic Society Virtual Meeting on “Factors Associated with Parental Incarceration amongst Pediatric Victims of Interpersonal Violence.” Dr. Twumasi has also presented on HIV/AIDS in adolescents and firearm injury prevention and gun violence.

In her free time, Dr. Twumasi enjoys trying new restaurants, spending time outdoors with her dog, reading, dancing, traveling and yoga.
