Pediatric Polyneuropathy Cognitive Disorders
Polyneuropathy occurs when the peripheral nerves are damaged, which can impact brain and cognitive (thinking) function.
When damage occurs to the peripheral nerves (all nerves beyond the brain and spinal cord), polyneuropathy results.
Neuropathies generally fall into three categories:
- Acquired neuropathy – This type develops over time due to a known cause.
- Hereditary neuropathy – This type is passed down in families.
- Idiopathic neuropathy – This type develops due to an unknown cause.
Symptoms of polyneuropathy cognitive disorders include the following, usually in the hands, arms, legs or feet:
- Hypersensitivity (your body has an exaggerated response to a trigger)
- Pain or weakness
- Tingling or burning
