Prenatal Cardiac Consultation

Children’s Health℠ provides prenatal counseling to discuss every option available to care for and treat children with congenital heart defects. Early detection and preparation for care is vital. After birth comprehensive evaluation is available for all suspected heart conditions. A prominent request is that we provide second opinions when the proposed evaluation or treatment of a child with heart disease is unclear.

High-Risk Pregnancies

If you had the ability to detect a life-threatening illness months before it surfaced, would you take every available precaution to prepare to treat the problem? At Children's Health, physicians use non-invasive diagnostic imaging to determine if a mother is carrying a child who is among the seven in 1,000 born with congenital heart defects each year. Early detection allows the medical staff to plan preeminent care for the child immediately after birth. We collaborate with perinatologists and obstetricians who specialize in high-risk pregnancies to reduce the stress on parents and families expecting a child with a prenatally diagnosed heart defect. In addition to consults with Fetal Cardiologists trained in echocardiography, we also offer parents tours of our units and meetings with our heart surgeons to begin the plan of care.

World Class Expertise

For some individuals heart disease may not present until after birth. A complete evaluation can be performed by our specialists for neonates to young adults.  Seriously ill patients can be transferred to the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at any time. Less urgent consultations can be performed in one of our clinics or at many local nurseries by cardiologists who are members of UT Southwestern’s acclaimed faculty. This large group practice allows for sub specialization with world class expertise in imaging, cardiac intervention, electrophysiology, heart transplantation, surgery, critical care and cholesterol disorders. Many of the families seeking consultation wish to take advantage of this expertise to obtain second opinions.
