Arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are rare, abnormal connections between an artery and vein. They can occur anywhere in the body, but we most commonly see AVFs in the brain, close to its protective lining.
Aneurysms occur when an area of an artery bulges or balloons due to a weakening of the artery wall. Aneurysms are not common in children, but can happen, and they are not typically symptomatic unless they rupture.
An arterial dissection is a tear in the inside lining of an artery in the head or neck that supplies blood flow to the brain. In children, arterial dissections are most commonly due to trauma.
Vein of Galen Malformation (VOGM) is a type of arteriovenous malformation that occurs when arteries connect directly to the Vein of Galen. VOGMs typically present during early prenatal development and are found in-utero during ultrasounds or shortly after birth.
Moyamoya is a rare disease in which arteries at the base of the brain become progressively constricted or blocked. Moyamoya stands for “puff of smoke” in Japanese and describes the way the tiny vessels surrounding the blockage look on imaging studies.

A cerebral sinovenous thrombosis occurs when a blood clot forms and blocks a vein in the brain. When this happens, blocked blood flow can cause a hemorrhage or stroke. This is uncommon in children, but we offer a high level of expertise in treating children when it does occur.

Cavernous malformations, also known as cavernous angiomas, cavernomas or cavernous hemangiomas, are an abnormal tangle of capillaries and small veins. These tangles, or caverns, fill with blood or tissue, resulting in popcorn-like formations.

Hemangiomas are benign tumors that will typically disappear over time. They are swellings, or growths, of the cells that line blood vessels. They typically appear in the first few weeks of life and grow rapidly over the first six months.
