Focused on Children
Children’s Health℠ Children’s Medical Center Dallas is the only academic health care facility in North Texas dedicated exclusively to the comprehensive care of children from birth to age 18. At Children's Health, we know that kids are not just small adults, which is why the doctors on our medical staff are specially trained in treating the unique needs of young patients. In fact, Children’s Health offers access to some of the nation’s best pediatric doctors. Our medical staff includes more than 1,000 doctors in over 50 different specialties.
Our mission at Children’s Health has always been to make life better for children. That is why we offer services to our patients that are not only designed to treat the physical, but also the emotional and psychological aspects of childhood illness.
The art studio is a calming and inspiring place that gives patients a chance to leave their hospital room to color, paint, make arts and crafts and let their imagination run wild; siblings are welcome, too. When patients are not able to leave their rooms, we bring art supplies to them so they can create masterpieces at the bedside. Click here to learn more.
Child Life services
The Child Life specialists at Children's Health provide age-appropriate information to help children cope with the hospital and prepare them emotionally for invasive procedures and surgery. They explain procedures in terms patients and their siblings can understand. Techniques may include engaging children in medical play by showing them how to give a teddy bear an injection or listen to its heart with a play stethoscope.
During hospitalization, children often experience heightened fear and anxiety or a feeling that they lack any control. Music therapy can help address these and other needs by providing opportunities for patients to make independent choices and express themselves through the medium of music. Click here to learn more.
The Pediatric Pain Management Center assesses and treats children with ongoing chronic muscle, bone and nerve pain—particularly those who are having a hard time coping with their pain. Common conditions treated include recurrent abdominal pain, headaches, and arm or leg pain. Patients with chest pain, back pain and pain from nerve injury, rheumatologic conditions and cancer can also be seen.
Frequent or lengthy hospital stays can interfere with schoolwork. We offer Open Classroom hours for hospitalized children and their siblings in kindergarten through 12th grade. Instruction and tutoring are provided by Texas Education Agency-certified educators with experience teaching children with medical conditions. Click here to learn more.
