Angela Scheuerle, M.D., is a Medical Geneticist at Children’s Health℠ and faculty member at UT Southwestern Medical Center.  She is an expert in dysmorphology – the study of birth defects and abnormal body formation – and the public health impact of birth defects.

Dr. Scheuerle earned her medical degree from the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine. She then completed her residency in Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. She also completed fellowships in Medical Genetics at Baylor College of Medicine and in Clinical Ethics at the University of Chicago College of Medicine.

Dr. Scheuerle holds three academic appointments at UT Southwestern: Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Genetics and Metabolism; Professor in the Eugene McDermott Center for Human Development; and Professor in the Department of Pathology, Division of Genetic Diagnostics. She also serves as co-Director of the fellowship program in laboratory genetics and genomics. In these roles, she teaches medical students, residents and fellows about birth defects and how to identify genetic conditions.

Dr. Scheuerle is senior Clinical Reviewer for the Texas Birth Defect Registry, a program of the Texas Department of State Health Services Birth Defect Epidemiology and Surveillance Branch.  This program collects data on all pregnancies and children in Texas who are affected with a birth defect, and is the largest such program in the world.  One recent focus of the program has been a surveillance response to the Zika virus epidemic. 

She also works with multiple pharmaceutical companies to help determine what effect certain medicines may have on pregnancies and fetuses. The broadest of these programs is the Antiretroviral Pregnancy Registry, which monitors use of AIDS/HIV medications around the world.  As part of this work, she created a new classification scheme for birth defects that is now recommended by the FDA for use in pharmaceutical pregnancy surveillance registries.

Dr. Scheuerle has authored or co-authored more than 100 publications of original articles, reviews, textbook chapters and editorials. She has lectured nationally and internationally on teratology, birth defects and genetic conditions. Dr. Scheuerle serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Craniofacial Surgery and an ad-hoc reviewer for dozens of journals, including Pediatrics, Clinical Genetics and the American Journal of Medical Genetics. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics, and a member of the National Birth Defects Prevention Network and the American Society of Human Genetics.

Dr. Scheuerle also volunteers her time to help her community and medical trainees. She serves as a Founder’s circle member of the Ferguson Road Initiative for community improvement and volunteers with North Texas Public Broadcasting. This year she was appointed by Dallas County Commissioner Theresa Daniels to serve on the Dallas County Child Welfare Board, which oversees part of Dallas County Child Protective Services. Dr. Scheuerle also serves as a Charter member of the University of the South Pre-Health Advisory Board, helping undergraduate students succeed early in their health careers.

Dr. Scheuerle has been recognized as an Outstanding Pediatric Subspecialist every year since 2004 by D Magazine. She was also awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the National Birth Defects Prevention Network. She is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics.
