Becky Moore Story
Spend any amount of time with Becky Moore, BSN, RN, CPN, as she cares for patients in the Claude Prestidge Cystic Fibrosis Center at Children's Health, and there's no question that she is exactly where she was always meant to be or why she was recently recognized as a 2018 D Magazine Excellence in Nursing winner.
For the past 11 and a half years, Becky has worked tirelessly for her patients, whom she lovingly refers to as her "kiddos," fulfilling her childhood dreams to enter the medical profession.
"I always said I wanted to be a pediatrician when I was younger, so after college, I worked as a surgery clerk on the weekends and became certified as an EMT," Becky says. "Then I started taking nursing prerequisite classes online in the evenings and eventually quit my job to attend nursing school full-time."
Becky graduated from nursing school in May 2006 and started in the pulmonary unit at Children's Heath just one month later. She eventually transitioned to the Cystic Fibrosis clinic in 2013, where she has worked ever since. She says what she loves most about her job is that she feels she makes a difference for each and every patient, often starting at birth.
Since cystic fibrosis is on the standard newborn screening tests, many families now learn that their child has the disease just weeks after he or she is born. Becky says that as a mom to two young boys herself, she can't imagine how difficult receiving that diagnosis would be, but that she tries to empathize with families about what their children are going through.
"I think one of the most challenging things for our families is that not a lot of people know about or understand cystic fibrosis, which is a chronic disease with no cure," Becky says. "So I will bend over backwards to make sure my kiddos have everything they need, whether it be samples of medications or supplements, and that their families are supported."
Leslie Ferons, Practice Administrator, Ambulatory Services is quick to point out Becky's passion for her patients as well.
"She is one of the most passionate nurses I know," Leslie says. "She works tirelessly on a daily basis to support our physicians, our patients and the entirely multidisciplinary team and lives out the Children's Health values every single day."
When Becky's not at work, she enjoys spending time with her husband, Ken, and two sons, Grayson and Graham, who keep her busy on Saturdays out on the soccer and baseball fields.
