DALLAS (Jan. 23, 2020) – Children’s Health℠, the eighth-largest pediatric health care provider in the nation and the leading pediatric health care system in North Texas, announces plans to expand Children’s Medical Center Plano during the next three years to provide care to the rapidly growing North Texas pediatric population. Its Plano campus opened in 2008 and provides more than 180,000 patient encounters each year.
“Children’s Medical Center Plano was the first pediatric hospital north of Dallas when we opened in 2008. Throughout the last decade, we have grown alongside our community and a pediatric population that outpaces the nation in growth. While we have an extensive network of providers all working to serve the needs of the community, we have seen the average number of patient families we serve increase year-over-year,” said Vanessa Walls, executive vice president of the Northern Market for Children’s Health. “In addition, today we have many families traveling to our Dallas campus to receive specialty care not currently supported in Plano. This expansion allows us to not only serve our growing community, but also their growing medical needs closer to home, as we strengthen and invest in our world-class, critical and tertiary care programs in Plano.”
Expansion plans for the Plano campus include the addition of a 300,000-square-foot tower housing expanded specialty care programs, such as cardiology, oncology, gastroenterology, orthopedics and neurology, among others. The new tower, which will nearly double the size of the hospital facility, will increase the total number of available beds from 72 to 240 and is expected to be complete by early 2024.
Ancillary services, such as pharmacy, lab and imaging, will also expand to serve the added beds. Additional operating room space will be incorporated into building plans, and the emergency room will be expanded, upgraded and relocated on campus to best serve patients and their families. Finally, a new parking structure will be built to accommodate more patient families and visitors.
Beyond physical expansion and program investments on the Plano campus, Children’s Health continues to extend its network of world-class care in the surrounding communities. From 2018 – 2019, Children’s Health opened three Children’s Health PM Urgent Cares with locations in The Colony, Flower Mound and McKinney. In addition, in 2019 it became the official pediatric partner of Prosper ISD to provide comprehensive care for students, including telehealth, telebehavioral health and sports medicine services in each of its schools. Children’s Health provides school-based telehealth and/or school-based telebehavioral health programs in 17 school districts in Collin and Denton counties.
“Children’s Medical Center Plano was built to be a dedicated pediatric hospital for families in this region. As we expand this hospital and our network in the area, we continue our promise to care for children, close to home, today, tomorrow and for many generations to come,” says Walls. “We are committed to being a world-class and comprehensive pediatric health care provider north of Dallas to serve the growing community and make life better for even more children.”
