Eric Mendeloff, M.D., is a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon at The Heart Center at Children’s Health℠. Dr. Mendeloff specializes in treating congenital heart disease. He cares for children of all ages, from infants to teens.
Dr. Mendeloff graduated from UCLA School of Medicine. He completed his general surgery residency at University of Michigan Medical Center and his cardiothoracic surgery and pediatric cardiothoracic surgery fellowships at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/St. Louis Children’s Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine.
Along with providing high-quality care, Dr. Mendeloff prides himself on his dedication to the bond he creates with each child and family he works with. He takes special care to meet and consult with the family at several points throughout the process, attending support groups and checking in with the patients that he says he treats “as if they were my own children.”
“It’s a real thrill for me to see these babies I work with grow up and become healthy kids who are out enjoying their lives,” says Dr. Mendeloff. “It’s why I am passionate about what I do. I went into medicine to make a difference in children’s lives.”
Dr. Mendeloff believes that having a positive and empathetic team is vital to providing high-quality care to patients and their family. He strives to create excellent communication among all members of the team so each child receives the right care, at the right time for their specific needs.
“You have to be able to think about what it’s like to be a patient or a parent,” says Dr. Mendeloff. “Having a whole health care team that is focused on caring for families is so important.”
Dr. Mendeloff is published in numerous studies focused on the improvement, safety and quality of transplantation. He is a member of several professional societies, including the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplant and the Congenital Heart Surgeons’ Society. He serves as an editorial reviewer for Annals of Thoracic Surgery, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and the Annals of Surgery.
When Dr. Mendeloff is not working, he enjoys spending time with his wife, two daughters and two sons and their dog, Tosh.
