Changes to Appointments, Surgery, and Other Services Due to COVID-19Updated April 4, 2020 at 11:42 am
At Children’s Health℠, the safety of our patients, team members and community remain our primary focus. Please know that we are maintaining operations, continuing to see current patients and accept new patients when it is safe and prudent to do so.
With that in mind, and in light of the evolving novel coronavirus (COVID-19) situation, we are strategically adjusting our operations based on the latest guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommending continued social distancing, including prioritizing urgent and emergency visits and procedures.
Here are how these new measures may affect both new and existing patients:
Elective and Non-Emergency Surgical Procedures
After careful consideration, and only when we have determined there will be no negative impact for the condition and care of a child, we have made the difficult decision to reschedule non-emergency surgical procedures through May 8. A Children’s Health team member will contact you if this affects your child’s procedure and will work with you to schedule a new date.
While we understand this may be disappointing, the decision reflects our ongoing commitment as your caregivers to safeguard the health of your child, family and community. Thank you for understanding why this is an important choice for us to make.
Routine and Non-Emergency Medical Appointments
In addition, and as a means of practicing social distancing when possible, we are taking the proactive step of rescheduling many routine, non-emergency medical, clinical and imaging appointments (e.g., physicals, annuals, and other well visits). All appointments planned before June 1 will be reviewed by our team of clinical professionals and:
- In cases where it is medically safe to do so, appointments will be rescheduled for a later date. We will reach out to you to reschedule appointments, when necessary.
- In some instances, our clinical team may recommend the appointment proceed as a Virtual Visit using Children’s Health℠ Virtual Care. This option connects you and your family with our team of board-certified physicians, clinicians and nurse practitioners for 24/7, high-quality care right from your smartphone, tablet or computer. A member of our team will contact you if this is an option for your appointment.
Please keep existing appointments unless directed otherwise. We urge anyone with fever, cough and shortness of breath to first call your provider before coming in for your appointment.

As the situation with COVID‑19 continues to evolve, maintaining the safety of our patients, team members and visitors remains our primary focus. After careful consideration, and to support the CDC's guidelines regarding social distancing, the Sleep Center is temporarily postponing non‑emergent outpatient sleep studies, effective immediately. The Sleep Center will remain closed until further notice.
If it is determined an emergent inpatient sleep study is required, the sleep study will take place at Children's Medical Center Dallas, where the on-call sleep specialist will be paged for inpatient requests and a pulmonary consult will assess the urgency. The Sleep Specialist/Pulmonologists are monitoring the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) recommendations on inpatient sleep studies as it relates to COVID‑19.
Patients who are usually seen at the TCN clinic at Plano Specialty Center 1 should be aware that patients can be seen via virtual visits. Please contact the clinic for more information.
