The Volunteer Services Department at Children’s Medical Center facilitates the Observer Program that allows individuals in the community to spend time in the organization shadowing staff members and physicians. The Volunteer Department does not match individuals with an observation placement. It is the responsibility of the individual to arrange for an observation period with a staff member of physician. Individuals eligible for this program include:
High School Students 16 years of age or older
Undergraduate College Students
Post Graduate College Students
Adults interested in exploring careers in health care
The staff member or physician must complete a Request for Observer form and submit to the Volunteer Department. When this form is received the observer will then be contacted to complete the remaining requirements. Please be aware it takes a minimum of two weeks to complete these requirements. These requirements include:
Consent for a background check (if 18 or older)
Health Information Form that includes proof of:
Influenza immunization during Flu Season (typically September- April)

Medical Student, Residents and Fellows
Medical Students, Residents and Fellows are handled through Graduate Medical Education (GME). GME does not match individuals with an observation placement. It is the responsibility of the individual to arrange for an observation period with a member of the Medical Staff. If you are currently enrolled medical school and have received approval for observation from an attending, please contact GME at 214-456-2729. If you are in a residency/fellowship training program and have received approval for observation, please contact GME at 214-456-0424.
