What is Pancreatitis?
Pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas. While pancreatitis is most commonly caused by alcohol abuse in adults, most childhood pancreatitis results from gallstones, trauma, or a genetic predisposition (familial pancreatitis). Most childhood pancreatitis is self-limited and resolves without surgery.
However, some complications of childhood pancreatitis may require surgery, such as pancreatic cysts or obstruction of the pancreatic duct.
