Rheumatology: Why Children's Medical Center?

  • The medical staff at Children's includes 4 board certified/board eligible pediatric rheumatologists. They monitor the progress of approximately 1,000 pediatric rheumatology patients a year. There are only 270 pediatric board-certified rheumatologists in the country.
  • The rheumatologists work in collaboration with UT Southwestern, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital and Baylor to form the Center for Pediatric Rheumatology, aiding in the treatment of pediatric rheumatology patients.

Description of services:

Outpatient clinic for children (birth - 17 years old) new to rheumatology and inpatient consultative services for patients with rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases of childhood and diseases thought to be collagen-vascular in origin.

Procedures performed or problems diagnosed and treated:

Diseases most commonly treated include:

  • Juvenile arthritis
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus
  • Dermatomyositis
  • Vasculitis
  • Scleroderma

Other reasons for referral may include:

  • Prolonged joint pain or swelling
  • Non-traumatic musculoskeletal pain
  • Weakness
  • Rash
  • Fever of unknown origin

Information for referral sources:

  • 17 years or younger
  • This service provides a clinic for patients new to rheumatology and inpatient consultations at Children's.
  • Most children diagnosed with arthritis will receive medical care in the rheumatology clinics at The Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children.
  • Children with newly diagnosed Systemic Lupus Erythematosus will be followed clinic at Children's
