Pathology Laboratory Medicine: Why Children's

Making life better for children, one test at a time.

This statement was chosen by the staff to reflect the mission of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Using Lean principles, every test is performed by skilled personnel to produce the highest quality results for the best care of our patients. Staffed by almost 200 medical technologists, administrators, administrative assistants and pathologists, approximately 1.6 million tests are performed per year.

Twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, the Core Laboratories at Children's Medical Center Dallas and Legacy provide specialized services in the areas of Chemistry, Hematology, Urinalysis, Microbiology, Virology, and Transfusion Medicine. Pediatric focused phlebotomy services, Molecular Pathology, Anatomic Pathology, Electron Microscopy, Test Development and Research Support are also part of the laboratory services. Pathologist and/or Clinical Consultants are faculty of UT Southwestern Medical Center and are available for consultation through the Laboratory's Customer Service line or the medical center's operator. Any testing not offered at Children's is sent to a reference lab chosen for quality testing and ability to handle pediatric specimens.

The Laboratories are accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP). The Transfusion Medicine Department is also accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB).
