CCBD: Sickle Cell Population
The pediatric sickle program at Children's and UT Southwestern is one of the nation's largest, with more than 600 active patients under the age of 18. Dallas has a large African-American population (24 percent of the total population of 1.23 million in the 2006 census), and the population within the large rural area of East Texas, which our program serves, also includes many African Americans. Statistics about the children we care for are shown below.
