Ronda Sisak, a clinical dietitian at
Children’s Medical Center Dallas, has 10 healthy Halloween recipes that
kids will scream for.
Sisak is experienced in
helping children develop a taste for healthy eating – she is part of a team
of experts involved in the Dean Foods LEAN Families Program at
Children’s, the first certified pediatric weight
management program in the nation. The program educates children and their
families to create a healthy lifestyle through an awareness of
nutrition and to help change behaviors associated with unhealthy
eating habits.
Candy Corn Popcorn
Balls
8 cups popped light butter microwave popcorn
1 cup candy
corn
1/4 cup butter
1/4 tsp salt
1 10-ounce bag
marshmallows
Cooking spray
Combine popcorn and candy corn in large
bowl. Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium heat; stir in
salt and marshmallows. Reduce heat to low; cook for seven minutes or
until the marshmallows melt and the mixture is smooth. Stir
frequently. Pour marshmallow mixture over popcorn mixture, stirring to
coat well. Lightly coat hands with cooking spray; shape popcorn
mixture into 20 balls. Yields 20 servings.
Monster
Apples
Make caramel apples from kits. Let kids
create their own monsters by adding marshmallow eyes, a raisin nose,
carrot pieces for a mouth and nut slices for
hair.
Baked Pumpkin
Seeds
Wash pumpkin seeds. Spread light layer of shortening onto cookie
sheet. Put seeds on cookie sheet and sprinkle with salt and melted
butter. Bake at 250 degrees for 1 1/2 hours or until brown. You
may want to turn over and stir once or twice and add more salt or
butter during baking.
