Description of services:
The Epilepsy Monitoring Unit is a six-bed dedicated wing staffed by nurses, technicians and physicians on the medical staff with expertise in epilepsy and other neurological conditions. Advanced technology allows patients to leave their room and play in a staffed play room while continuing to be monitored. All floors in the critical care unit are hard wired to the epilepsy monitoring unit, allowing staff to maintain 24-hour records on patients post-epilepsy surgery and for other critical care patients requiring long-term video EEG monitoring.
Procedures performed or problems diagnosed and treated:
- Rule out seizures
- Characterization of questionable spells
- Evaluation of neurological status
- Routine long-term video EEG monitoring
- Epilepsy surgery evaluations
- Initiation of ketogenic diet program
Evaluation of a spectrum of disorders that affect the central and peripheral nervous systems:
- Seizure disorders and medication effects
- Intractable seizures
- Encephalopathy
- Seizure surgery candidates
Information for referral sources:
- A referral from physician or referral source is required.
- Pre-authorization is required by some insurance plans.
- Patient instructions for specific tests will be provided when the appointment is scheduled.
- To avoid unnecessary testing, have the family bring relevant medical records, test results and X-rays to the appointment.
- Services are provided in close cooperation with the patient's referring physician.
- Diagnosis, evaluation and recommended treatment information is provided promptly to the referring physician.
Please provide the following when calling to schedule a patient for a diagnostic evaluation:
- Patient name and date of birth
- Probable diagnosis
- Insurance/referral information
- Physician clinical findings or symptoms which caused the patient to visit physician
