Description of services:
Complete pediatric and adolescent stem cell transplant services are available, including:
- Pre-transplant assessment to evaluate the patient's disease status and ability to tolerate transplantation.
- Access to unrelated bone marrow and umbilical cord blood donors through the National Morrow Donor Program.
- Compatibility testing of both donor and recipient and thorough donor evaluation.
- Psychosocial assistance for the patient undergoing transplantation and for other family members.
- On-going parent and patient education.
- Comprehensive post-transplant follow-up care and monitoring.
In order to accommodate the many facets of stem cell transplant care, including medical and psychosocial factors, the center is comprised of a diversified team of pediatric experts, including physicians on the medical staff, social workers, dietitians and child life specialists.
Procedures performed or problems diagnosed and treated:
Transplantation of bone marrow, peripheral blood and umbilical-cord stem cells for children with:
- Leukemia
- Lymphoma
- Solid tumors
- Aplastic, thalassemia
- Metabolic disorders
- Congenital immunodeficiencies
Information for referral sources:
- A referral from physician or referral source is required.
- Patient instructions for specific tests will be provided when the appointment is scheduled.
- To avoid unnecessary testing, have the family bring relevant medical records, test results and X-rays to the appointment.
- Services are provided in close cooperation with the patient's referring physician.
- Diagnosis, evaluation and recommended treatment information is provided promptly to the referring physician.
After hours or for emergencies, call 214-456-7000 and request the on-call hematologist-oncologist.
Please provide the following when calling to schedule a patient for a diagnostic evaluation:
- Patient name and date of birth
- Probable diagnosis
- Insurance/referral information
- Physician clinical findings or symptoms which caused the patient to visit physician
- Parent (guarantor) name, address and phone number
Why Children's Medical Center?
- More than two-thirds of our experienced nursing staff have trained extensively to care for the special needs of children undergoing stem cell transplant. Orientation is provided twice a year to certify nurses in stem cell transplant.
- Physicians on the medical staff performed Dallas' first umbilical cord transplant in 1994 and Texas' first bone marrow transplant for a child with sickle cell disease in 1995.
- Received "Partner Award" from the National Marrow Donor Program Partner in recognition of our mission to increase awareness of bone marrow transplant and the need for marrow donors as well as sponsorship of the Be a Matchmaker Bone Marrow Donor Drive each year on Valentine's Day.
- More than 100 transplants have been performed since the program's inception in 1992 with an average of 15 per year.
- Developed a Stem Cell Transplant Handbook for families with children undergoing transplant at Children's. Explanation of tissue typing, pre-admission work-up, marrow harvest, central line care, daily routine and post transplant procedures are discussed.
- Offers state-of-the-art stem cell transplant from peripheral stem cells, bone marrow and umbilical cord blood.
- Multidisciplinary team specially trained to work with infants and children.
- Participation in a variety of national and international research studies.
