Description of services:

The Low Birth Weight Clinic provides comprehensive medical and psychosocial treatment through intensive intervention, education, social services and developmental testing for premature infants from birth to age 3. Services include Texas Health Steps and immunizations.

Procedures performed or problems diagnosed and treated:

Primary care for high-risk infants born at Parkland Memorial Hospital with:

• Severe prematurity - less than 3 pounds, 5 ounces at birth
• Low birth weight - less that 5 pounds, 8 ounces with one or more comorbidities, such as:
• Bronchopulmonary dysplasia
• Intraventricular hemorrhage grades 3 and 4
• Cystic periventricular leucomalacia
• Necrotizing enterocolitis requiring resection

Information for referral sources:

• Generally, referrals are limited to high-risk infants from Parkland Memorial Hospital as described above. Infants from other facilities may be considered on a case-by-case basis. When making referrals, ask to speak with Janet Morgan, RN.
• A written referral from physician or referral source is required if Children’s is not the primary care provider.
• Pre-authorization is required by some insurance plans.
• To avoid unnecessary testing, have the family bring relevant medical records, test results and radiographs to the appointment.
• Services are provided in close cooperation with the patient’s referring physician, if Children’s is not the primary care provider.
• Diagnosis, evaluation and recommended treatment information is provided promptly to the referring physician, if Children’s is not the primary care provider. Please provide the following when calling to schedule a patient for a diagnostic examination:
• Patient name, date of birth, gestational age, birth weight and birth hospital
• Insurance/referral information
• Reason for referral and any additional concerns

The Children’s Low Birth Weight Clinic works closely with Parkland Memorial Hospital’s neonatal intensive care unit to identify infants whose demanding medical and social needs would be best addressed by a specialized clinic.
