At Children's Medical CenterBMI (Body Mass Index): As defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, BMI is a number calculated from a child's weight and height. BMI is a good judge of body fatness for most children and teens.
Obesity: BMI for age and gender at or above the 95th percentile.
Overweight: BMI for age and gender from the 85th to 94th percentile.
Acanthosis nigricans: Thickening and darkening of the skin caused by high insulin levels. The most common places acanthosis is found are on the neck, under the arm and/or in the groin. Since insulin is inside the body, there is no way to reduce the acanthosis except by lowering the insulin levels.
Insulin: A hormone that the pancreas makes to help get your blood sugar from the blood into the cell where the sugar is turned into energy.
Type 2 diabetes mellitus: Is high blood sugar due to the lack of enough insulin to meet the needs of the body, due to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance can be present for years before type 2 diabetes sets in. After years of fighting against insulin resistance, the pancreas starts to give up, or burn out. It is the time during this battle between the pancreas and insulin resistance that gives us a chance to try and prevent diabetes it before it's too late. We do it by trying to reduce the resistance through exercise and weight loss.
