LEAN Families

At Children's Medical Center

What We Treat

LEAN Families is a program designed to teach healthy lifestyle behaviors to overweight children and their families. The goal is not rapid weight loss immediately, instead we focus on changes that lead to a healthier lifestyle and can be continued long term. The whole family is asked to make changes together so that no one feels "different." We believe that a healthy lifestyle will lead to appropriate weight in time, and better health for a lifetime. Depending on the degree of overweight, growing children may not actually need to lose weight, they may just need to maintain their weight while they grow taller.

LEAN Families began in April 2006 and has enrolled more than 150 children in the program. Over 80 percent of all participants and their families successfully completed the program. Approximately fifty percent of participants maintained their BMI or decreased it during the 12-week program. Many of the parents lose weight, as well. When healthy lifestyle behaviors are measured, each participant's score improved.

Our goal at the LEAN Families program is to help families make changes that will teach children how to live a more healthy life and prevent all of the long-term consequences of being overweight.
