Description of services:

The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders is one of the nation's premier programs for children with hematologic problems. The center offers a full array of the latest diagnostic capabilities and therapies available for children with blood disorders.

Procedures performed or problems diagnosed and treated:

Consultative diagnostic and management services for infants, children and adolescents with the following conditions:

  • Aplastic anemia and disorders of the red blood cells, including autoimmune hemolytic anemia, heredity spherocytosis, thalassemia, G6PD deficiency, etc.
  • Qualitative and quantitative disorders of leukocytes (neutropenia, leukocytosis, granulocyte function disorders, etc.).
  • Thrombocytopenia and platelet disorders.
  • Disorders of the lymph nodes and spleen (lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, post-splenectomy state, etc.).
  • Bone marrow failure syndromes.
  • Medically ill patients with concomitant hematologic disorders.
  • Miscellaneous hematologic problems.
  • Chronic transfusion programs for patients with sickle cell disease, thalassemia, Diamond-Blackfan anemia, etc.
  • Counseling for families with hereditary blood disorders and related conditions, such as thalassemia and hereditary hemochromatosis.

Information for referral sources:

  • A referral from physician or referral source is required.
  • To avoid unnecessary testing, have the family bring relevant medical records, test results and X-rays to the appointment.
  • Services are provided in close cooperation with the patient's referring physician.
  • Diagnosis, evaluation and recommended treatment information is provided promptly to the referring physician.

Please provide the following when calling to schedule a patient for a diagnostic evaluation:

  • Patient name and date of birth
  • Probable diagnosis
  • Insurance/referral information
  • Physician clinical findings or symptoms which caused the patient to visit physician
  • Parent (guarantor) name, address and phone number

Why Children's Medical Center?

  • The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at Children's serves as the major diagnostic and treatment resource in Northeast Texas for children with a variety of hematologic disorders.
  • English and Spanish information brochures, developed by the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, are available for parents and physicians regarding the diagnosis and management of the most common hematologic problems, such as ITP, anemia, hereditary spherocytosis, iron deficiency, splenomegaly/splenectomy and neutropenia.
  • The hematology program at Children's participates in National Institutes of Health funded clinical trials networks in hemostasis, transfusion medicine and thalassemia.
  • Approximately 400 children are evaluated each year at Children's for a variety of hematologic disorders.
  • The hematology program is internationally known for its clinical research contributions in areas such as immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), Diamond-Blackfan anemia and chronic neutropenia.
  • Children's has the largest number of hematology-oncology physicians in North Texas whose practice is solely hematology (non-malignant blood disorders).
  • Children's offers the use of Ferriscan, which is a non-invasive measurement of liver iron that does not require a liver biopsy.
