Description of services:
- Cochlear implants are designed to restore a level of sound awareness to children who experience a severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss. Children from birth to age 18 may be considered for the program. The Dallas Cochlear Implant program represents a cooperative effort of the combined resources of Children's Medical Center Dallas, UT Southwestern and Callier Center for Communication Disorders. The program's team is multidisciplinary, consisting of audiologists, otolaryngologists, a speech-language pathologist, a psychologist and a research scientist.
- Each child is carefully evaluated by the implant team to determine if an implant is needed. The team also works with patients who already have cochlear implants.
- Unique features of the Dallas Cochlear Implant Program are:
- Support for the option of cochlear implants for individuals with severe or profound hearing impairment who receive limited benefit from other available technology.
- A multidisciplinary approach, including active family participation, to maximize each individual’s auditory and oral potential through individualized comprehensive evaluation, selection, treatment and rehabilitation.
- Commitment to investigating and documenting outcomes, to facilitate improved intervention with, and management of, individuals with deafness.
