Asthma Management Program

The Asthma Management Program at Children's Medical Center is an outpatient educational program that helps parents successfully manage their child’s asthma. The medical management of the child remains with the referring provider. The six-month bilingual program addresses common problems associated with the management of childhood asthma. Eligible participants are children 0-17 years of age at the time of enrollment who have asthma and live within the Dallas area. Most common insurance are accepted, including Medicaid.

The Asthma Management Program includes:

  • Two (2) home visits by a registered nurse to collect information about the home situation, provide asthma education and instruct about trigger mitigation measures.
  • Bi-weekly family contact by a Certified Nurse Asthma Educator
  • Providing each child with extensive educational materials and tools required to properly manage their
    asthma.

Since its inception in 2001, the Asthma Management Program has excellent outcomes, including a 94-percent reduction in inpatient admission and an 84-percent reduction in ER visits.

In addition, the Asthma Management Program at Children's was the first in Texas and third in the United States to receive certification by The Joint Commission for Disease-Specific Care Programs for pediatric asthma initiatives. Receiving certification from the Joint Commission affirms the Asthma Management Program adheres to the highest standards available and is serving the local population in the best way possible.
