The Children’s Medical Center Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) combines advanced technology and trained healthcare professionals to provide specialized care for sick newborn infants referred from hospitals and NICUs. The NICU provides advanced inpatient neonatal care using a multidisciplinary team and family-centered care approach. In addition, the physician services are available for telephone consultation 24 hours a day. The goal is to provide advanced neonatal care and return patients and families to their referring home NICU once their acute needs are met. We provide Inpatient, Outpatient, Consultation and Phone Consultation services.
The NICU offers comprehensive intensive care for infants with complex medical and surgical issues, including special metabolic, neurological and genetic conditions. We offer immediate availability of high-level medical & surgical subspecialty consultation. Additionally, we offer on-site neonatal pharmacy services. The NICU works closely with the Fetal/Neonatal Program to provide prenatal counseling to families with identified fetal anomalies and facilitate orientation to the Children's NICU environment.
The following are some of the other specialty trained healthcare professionals who will be involved in the care of your baby:
Children’s Medical Center Dallas has a team of highly specialized, trained personnel who work specifically in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of the hospital, who are equipped to handle the tiniest of babies. We are experts in taking care of newborn babies who may have difficulty at birth to include those born prematurely, those who experienced a difficult delivery, or those with birth defects. Fortunately for these babies, special care is available. We also have immediate or continuing care areas for babies who are not as sick but need specialized nursing care. If your child is transferred or referred to Children’s, you will be connected to one of our neonatologists to organize the transfer of the patient. Highly skilled registered nurses and respiratory therapists, specifically trained in neonatal resuscitation, and the transport team will transfer the neonate to the Children’s NICU.
