Description of services:

The UT Southwestern Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic offers care of any prenatal "high risk" pregnancy in which mother and baby need specialized monitoring and medical care. Our highly specialized services include:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of women with complications of pregnancy.
  • Care of pregnant women with pre-existing medical conditions which may be impacted by pregnancy.
  • Care of pregnant women with medical conditions which impact the pregnancy itself.
  • Specialization in the care of pregnant women having multiples: twins, triplets, or more.
  • Care of a pregnancy with a suspected or known birth defect.
  • Pre-conception counseling for couples contemplating or preparing for pregnancy.
  • Excellent coordination of care with multiple pediatric sub-specialists, who are located on site.

We provide Inpatient, Outpatient, Consultation and Phone Consultation services.

Problems diagnosed and treated:

Pregnant women with medical or surgical disorders including but not limited to:

  • Heart Disease
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Preeclampsia
  • Diabetes and other endocrine disorders
  • Kidney or gastrointestinal disease
  • Infectious Disease

Healthy women whose pregnancy is at markedly increased risk for an adverse outcome, such as:

  • Abnormal AFP or genetic screening blood test
  • Twins, triplets, or more
  • Recurrent pre-term labor and delivery
  • Premature rupture of the membranes
  • Recurrent pregnancy loss
  • Suspected fetal growth restriction

Procedures performed:

PROCEDURES:

  • Level II Ultrasound, a comprehensive and detailed study of the fetal anatomy
  • Abdominal or cervical cerclage
  • CVS (Chorionic Villus Sampling)
  • Fetal blood sampling
  • Fetal blood transfusion, also known as Percutaneous Umbilical Blood Sampling (PUBS)
  • Genetic amniocentesis
  • Fetal shunt procedures
  • Procedures related to complications of twin pregnancy including: TRAP Sequence and Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome
  • Amnioreduction
  • Ex-utero Intrapartum Therapy (Exit-procedure)

  • Genetic screening and diagnostic testing for chromosomal abnormalities
  • First Trimester Screening
  • Sequential Modified Screening
  • QUAD (AFP 4) Screening
  • Comprehensive Level II Ultrasound
  • Gestational Dating
  • Fetal Cardiac Echo
  • Cervical Length Surveillance
  • Non-Stress Test
  • Biophysical Profile
  • Doppler Flow Studies

To make a referral:

Information required for referrals:

  • Patient name, address, phone and date of birth.
  • Clinical findings or symptoms.
  • A written referral from physician or referral source is required.
  • Pre-authorization is required by some insurance plans.
  • Primary physician must provide relevant medical history before patient arrives for appointment.

Other Details:

  • Services are provided in close cooperation with the patient’s referring physician.
  • Diagnosis, evaluation and recommended treatment information is provided promptly to the referring physician.
