Description of services:

Specialized audiological evaluations through various types of hearing tests are provided for the assessment of infants, children and special populations. Audiology services are provided by certified and licensed clinical audiologists who specialize in pediatric assessment.

Procedures performed or problems diagnosed and treated:

A wide variety of procedures are available to assess a child's ability to hear and process sounds at various developmental stages, including:

  • Audiological consultation
  • Behavioral hearing evaluation
  • Visual reinforcement audiometry
  • Conditioned play audiometry
  • Tympanometry/acoustic reflex
  • Otoacoustic emissions
  • Auditory brainstem response (including bone conduction and tone burst ABRs)
  • Screening auditory brainstem response for infants 0-6 months of age.

  • Patient instructions for specific tests will be provided when the appointment is scheduled.
  • Diagnosis, evaluation and recommended treatment information is provided promptly to the referring physician.

Why Children's Medical Center?

  • Diagnosis and intervention are provided by a multidisciplinary team consisting of an audiologist, speech-language pathologist, parents, teachers and, on many occasions, psychologists.
  • A comprehensive battery of tests are given by an audiologist and a speech-language pathologist with extensive experience in assessing auditory disorders. Intervention may include therapy that can be provided by Children's. The audiologist and the speech-language pathologist develop recommendations for the child's educational program and home environment.
  • Pediatric audiologists at Children’s are skilled in evaluation of newborns and use state-of-the art procedures to provide comprehensive diagnostic evaluation of infants at risk for hearing loss.
