At Children's Medical Center

Oncology

The oncology program at Children’s Medical Center remains one of the most active services in the hospital and continues to grow in patient number and complexity. The CCBD has invested time and resources to improve its efficiency both for oncology and hematology patients. The following are some recent initiatives aimed at improving the experience for our patients both in the outpatient and inpatients environments.

  • The CCBD with the Department of Anesthesia provides anesthetic support for all invasive procedures. This allows patients and their parents the confidence and comfort of knowing procedures will be pain free and significantly improves the time spent in recovery.
  • The CCBD has a new outpatient clinic space that includes an increase more patient examination rooms, treatment rooms and a larger waiting area.
  • The CCBD opened an outpatient unit at Children’s Medical Center at Legacy in 2008 and in early 2009, inpatient services will also be available. The CCBD at Legacy is staffed by UT Southwestern faculty who have shared clinical responsibilities at both the Dallas and Legacy campuses.

The majority of children treated for malignancies at the CCBD are treated according to national Children’s Oncology Group (COG) protocols. In addition, the CCBD is one of only 20 institutions worldwide in the COG approved by the National Cancer Institute to treat children on experimental Phase I/II new agent trials.
