Kohl’s gives to Children’s

A commitment to injury prevention

Kohl’s Department Stores, through its Kohl's Cares for Kids program, gave more than $250,000 to support the Sports Injury Outreach Program at Children’s. Chance Thornton, a 6-year-old patient in the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, threw out the first pitch at a Texas Rangers game Sept. 16 to celebrate the continued support Children’s receives from Kohl’s.

The Sports Injury Outreach Program at Children’s is designed to educate child athletes, coaches and parents about avoiding injuries while playing sports. Physicians, nurses and dietitians from Children’s conduct educational clinics for many different sports including basketball, softball, baseball, football, soccer and track.

Preventing sports injuries

Since 2003, the program has touched more than 50,000 coaches and nearly 500,000 children. Clinics are held primarily in conjunction with the Plano Sports Authority and the Dallas Baseball Academy. Each coach in the clinic receives a sport-specific clipboard and a set of laminated flip-cards that provide information and illustrations about injuries, possible symptoms and basic first-aid techniques. Thanks to the funds from Kohl’s, Children’s expanded its reach to 32 clinics in 2008, up from 26 clinics in 2007.

Kohl’s is able to give to Children’s through the Kohl’s Cares for Kids program which has given more than $1.6 million locally to Children’s. The program offers seasonal, child-friendly items for $5 each, and it was launched nationwide in 2000 to reinforce the commitment Kohl’s demonstrates to the communities in which it serves and to promote children’s health initiatives.
