More than nine million children are overweight, a number that has tripled over the last 20 years. As part of an initiative to educate and empower youth to make healthy lifestyle choices, the Junior League of Plano presents this year's Kids in the Kitchen. This fun, free, family-friendly event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, April 18, at Children's Medical Center at Legacy in Plano.
Families can enjoy a host of activities and demonstrations, including a 'Move it, Move it' fun walk, fitness activities by the American Heart Association and Plano Sports Authority, heart-healthy cooking demonstrations, celebrity guest appearances by Miss Texas, Rebecca Robinson, Dorothy, Wags and Henry from the Wiggles and more!
Kids in the Kitchen is a national initiative of the Associations of Junior Leagues International to address the growing issue of childhood obesity and poor nutrition. The Junior League of Plano adopted Kids in the Kitchen as a project in 2006, and last year more than 700 people attended the event.
Representatives from the Dean Foods LEAN (Lifestyle Exercise and Nutrition) Families program at Children's will host a booth at the event to provide parents and kids with tools to make a habit out of living a healthy lifestyle. Children's will also provide an interactive "fat display" that illustrates the amount of sugar and fat in everyday foods.
No registration is required, and all activities are free. For your safety, we ask that you leave all bikes, skateboards, scooters and pets at home.
