For Dr. Edgar Newfield, spending time at Children's is still all about the heart.
Dr. Newfield, a pediatric cardiologist at Children's for almost 40 years, was one of the early pioneers in pediatric cardiology and was known worldwide for his work on pediatric pulmonary hypertension.
Retiring at the end of August 2006, Dr. Newfield has returned to Children's, but this time in a "civilian" capacity — he is now simply known as Volunteer Edgar.
"I have great regard for this hospital and I still wanted to be a part of the family after I retired," said Dr. Newfield. "When I came to Children's it was a little hospital. It's wonderful to see the growth that's going on and continues to go on."
Dr. Newfield has also experienced the patient side of Children's. His granddaughter was born with a congenital heart defect that was surgically repaired at the hospital.
"It's hard when (children) are sick, but kids tend to be so much more joyful. All they really want to do is laugh and be happy," Dr. Newfield said. "Instead of crotchety old geezers like me moaning in a bed, a kid's always got a smile — even when things are tough."
"If you can make their day a little bit nicer, it's a good job — it's worth doing."
