Elizabeth and Fehmi Karahan light up when given the opportunity to impact others through reading. And, providing valuable resources that encourage reading for patients and families is precisely what they plan to do for Children's at Legacy.
"Books, reading, research and learning have been central to our lives and the lives of our families," said Fehmi, president and CEO of The Karahan Companies. "The outlet to information whether through a book, a computer, a research journal or a patient-to-doctor exchange brings knowledge and understanding to any situation."
The Karahans sought to make a difference through the power of knowledge and provided a generous gift to support the Family Resource Center at Children's at Legacy. A trailblazer in the Legacy area, Fehmi's company has developed a number of retail centers, including The Shops at Legacy.
"Providing a resource center for the families at Children's will bring comfort through knowledge and hopefully healing through understanding and strength through the power to learn more," Fehmi said. "It is our hope this gift will be the foundation for the center to grow and expand with the hospital to be the most comprehensive access to information on children's health in the region."
Patient families will have access to resources such as informative pamphlets, computers, circulating books and a consumer health library with a children's section.
"The center will help them research more information about their child's diagnosis and treatment options and allow them to continue functioning as normally as possible during a hospital stay," said Judy Einstein, director of School and Library Services at Children's.
