The American Heart Association has introduced an exciting new program for healthcare providers called PEARS (Pediatric Emergency Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization). It is focused on the early recognition and stabilization of the patient until the code team or EMS arrives.

Clinical Education and the CPR Committee are collaborating with key groups to launch the new PEARS course here at Children's Medical Center.

This new course allows Children's to better meet the educational needs of nursing staff and care needs of patients. Whether you take PEARS or PALS will depend upon the acuity of your patient population. Nurses on units with lower acuity patients where codes are rare will transition to the PEARS course with their next renewal. Staff working in areas of high acuity and a greater chance of codes will continue with PALS.

First, a group of PALS instructors will be trained in PEARS. The first PEARS course is scheduled for March. Below is a breakdown of PALS vs. PEARS requirements by department. If you are PALS certified but your unit is now going to be a PEARS unit, you will not take the PEARS course until your PALS certification is nearing expiration.

PALS required

  • Critical Care RN/RCP/PNP
  • Radiology sedation nurses/RCP
  • All OR & PACU areas (inpatient and outpatient)
  • ED
  • All RCP
  • All transport staff
  • RPh/Pharmacy Cath Lab

If you require a PALS Provider Course register online.

Staff who have sedation privileges will also be affected. The sedation policy will be updated to state that sedation credentialed personnel may have either PALS or PEARS certification.
