At Children's, allied health professionals play an integral part in treating our patients throughout the facility. Take a look at some of the essential roles our allied health professionals perform.
With the advent of less invasive technology and the development of the information age, ambulatory care has become a fast-growing arena for healthcare professionals. Children's has more than 50 specialty ambulatory services, as well as therapy and diagnostic areas both on and off the main campus. Our staff also teaches patient families self-care and health maintenance in a variety of areas, from radiology and speech pathology to psychiatry and clinical nutrition.
With the oldest child life program in Texas and one of the largest in the country, Children's is dedicated to helping its hospitalized patients develop normally despite health problems. Members of our child life staff hold advanced-degree training in the growth and development of children. They provide age-appropriate information to help children cope with the hospital and prepare them emotionally for invasive procedures and surgery. Techniques include diagnosis-specific education, music therapy and play therapy.
The laboratory at Children's supports our busy pediatric inpatient and outpatient services with state-of-the-art equipment such as an electron microscope, which accommodate small pediatric samples. Research projects are conducted, and testing is done in support of researchers at Children's and at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center Dallas. Children's also serves as a national reference lab for many procedures.
Pharmaceutical services at Children's comprise one of the most technologically advanced departments in the country, using several automated drug delivery and storage systems. At Children's, you can gain experience in every aspect of practice, from distributive services to retail pharmacy to clinical research. Our pharmacists are specialists in compounding medicine for individual patients, as well as highly visible and active participants in the clinical care team.
Staff members keep up with advances in management of childhood disabilities. They also provide comprehensive rehabilitation evaluation and assessment of children with musculoskeletal and neurological impairments.
Each member of our technical team has been specially trained in pediatric radiography. Staff members work in both inpatient and outpatient settings, with cross-training available in most areas. The radiology department at Children's features a picture archiving and communication system with computed radiography. Modalities in the department include MRI, CT, nuclear medicine, special procedures, ultrasound and general diagnostics.
Our respiratory care practitioners work with a variety of medical professionals to treat a broad spectrum of pulmonary and related disorders. Areas of specialized service include general care, ambulatory care and critical care. Respiratory care practitioners are trained to provide advanced therapies such as HFOV, ECMO and nitric oxide.

Here's what one allied health professional at Children's had to say:
"I came to Children's because I wanted to work with children and their families, and I was so impressed with the hospital. I have stayed because I continue to be impressed. Children's provides a challenging, forever learning environment, and every day we, working as a team, try to make life better for children. I like being a part of that."
"It is really something to see patients and families that I worked with in my early days at Children's, when the kids were infants. Just last week in the ER waiting room, a mom recognized me and said hello. Her son is now 11 years old! I think it really means something to the families to have that history not only with the hospital but with some of the employees."
