Social Work

Social workers at Children's provide many essential services to our patients and their families such as providing immediate bereavement and grief counseling while with the family and also assist the family with resources for longer-term counseling outside of the hospital. In addition, social workers help patients and their families adapt to their illness and hospitalization and link families with outside agencies that provide assistance to children and their families. Social workers assist parents with advocating for their child's needs within the hospital system, education system and other outside systems. Our social workers also lead several parent support groups within the hospital and have information about diagnosis-related support groups in the community and provide brief therapeutic interventions that focus on acute critical situations with the aim of restoring the person to the level of functioning before a crisis.

In addition, our social workers provide:

  • Resources available while in the hospital
  • Discharge planning for Continuity of Care
  • Home health care
  • Individual and family therapy
  • Financial assistance
  • Emergency transportation
  • Lodging assistance
